MITCH BEAT HER THERE by ten minutes. When Dani pulled up, something that might have been relief touched his chest.

Christ, he’d been worried about her. Watching the minute hand inch between numbers, wondering if some bastard with a pair of shears was following her around… He’d spent half the afternoon cursing himself for letting her go. I’m trained and armed. So what? Training mattered when you came up against an opponent of comparable size and strength, who played by the rules of fighting. What about when the opponent was a hundred pounds heavier and came out of nowhere, armed with a pair of scissors and no rules at all?

He stalked over to the door of her car and held it open, did a quick once-over: She was okay. She got out and he blocked her with a kiss—nothing wild, but nothing chaste, either. Made sure she knew his intentions.

“How’s the leg?” he asked, taking her arm. The stitches had been mean-looking, the cut an angry red line. He’d come across it last night while reacquainting himself with her body.

“It’s fine,” she said. All business.

“Any luck?”

“Maybe. How ’bout you? You gonna be ready for the exhibition this weekend?”

“Most of the show is up. I’m still working on one particular set of photos.” Correction: He still hadn’t started working on one particular set. The ones Neil had given to Russ after the attack, while Mitch was still half-comatose. He couldn’t stand the thought of seeing them.

They followed Janet Milano to Rosie’s place. It was a small, one-bedroom apartment in a building of eight apartments, on a street of apartment buildings. When they got there, Dani filled them in on her visit with Keller Brookes.

“Camera?” Janet said after hearing it. “Yeah, now that you mention it, there should be a camera here someplace. She bought it about a month ago at WalMart.”

“Did the police look through her apartment?”

“Yeah, but I don’t think they found a camera.”

“Would you show us around?” Mitch asked.

“Sure. But it was usually in her purse. She bought a skinny one so it would fit in her purse.”

“What about her car?” Mitch asked.

“It was parked at the carnival,” Dani said, “so they’d still have it in Property. We got a list of everything in it, though. No camera.”

“I can call Mom and see if she has it,” Janet offered.

“Do that,” Mitch said, and turned to Dani after Janet left the room. “Was Rosie’s purse at the crime scene?”

“Yes. But there was no camera. But—”

“What?”

“I remember looking at her body, her right hand. She was all clenched up except that her hand was open, like something had been in it.”

“Huh,” Mitch said, imagining someone pulling a camera out of a dead woman’s hand. And cutting her hair. Goddamn freak.

Janet came back. “Mom doesn’t know about a camera.”

“Okay,” Dani said. “Does Rosie have a computer?”

“An old one. It’s in her bedroom. I’m not very good with computers, though.”

“I am,” Dani said.

Janet gave Dani carte blanche with Rosie’s computer and her belongings, showing no worry about what she might find.
